Growing
up in Nashville, Tennessee gives you the feel of a big city with the twist of a
small-town, and there is certainly no lack of creativity here. You see it
in everything from music to food. While I have never thought of myself as
an artist, there has always been a very practical, problem solving aspect to my
personality.
I
grew up in a family that took care of everything themselves when it came to
home repairs and even some automobile work. My dad was always figuring
out how to fix something for us, or a neighbor down the street. Somewhere
along the way I picked up that skill and it has proved its usefulness over and
over again.
My careers took me everywhere from door-to-door sales to most recently, the front office of an elementary school. As this job grew, I began to
realize God was pulling me in another direction. It
was time to start my own business.
When I
bought my first house, it needed lots of work, so my dad and I spent the next
two months doing everything from rewiring electrical outlets, to building
custom cabinets and tiling the kitchen backsplash. Once the bones of the
house were finished, it needed some furniture, hmmmm no money in the budget for those items. So with his help, we began designing and building a dining
room table. This was my first experience in realizing this wood is still
alive and will move and grow according to how I shape it. I was hooked on
the idea I could design something, and then build it to my
specifications. I knew at some point I wanted to do this for a living.
To
see a piece of wood go from raw planks (or even a fallen tree at the farm), to a beautiful item in your home is
incredibly gratifying. When you use a creative problem solving
skill to create something with a practical purpose while maintaining its beauty, you create items that stand the test of time.
